A Self-Guided Trip – 5 Days & 5 Nights
This trip explores the fabulous Benas Valley & Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, home to the greatest concentration of 3,000 meter peaks in the entire Pyrenees, including the 2 highest of all – Aneto and Posets. High summits, glaciers, magnificent waterfalls, canyons, and fertile lands of forests and meadows, offer a fantastic array of mountain scenery.
You’ll hike centuries-old paths from traditional rural landscapes into the wild heart of the mountains, allowing a fascinating glimpse into age-old customs and ways of life that continue into modern days in a pastoral landscape whose way of life was once widespread in the upland regions of Europe but now survives only in this part of the Pyrenees. The valleys leading up to the main ridgeline and Spain-France border preserve traditional landuse practices in which the relationship between humans and the environment have evolved over the centuries in a balanced, intelligent and sustainable manner, for mutual benefit.
France’s Pyrenees National Park is just across the ridge and some hikes offer the chance to cross the border!
Enjoy tasty cuisine based on fresh produce from the region’s agriculture, and if you enjoy wine, the local Somontano and Cinca areas produce some of Spain’s best wines.
There’ll be daily opportunities for observation of fauna & flora, with sure sightings of various species of vulture and other birds of prey, marmots and perhaps even the nimble sarrio or chamoix among others. In spring and summer, there are wildflowers galore. Autumn brings spectacular riots of color to the mixed forest.
