Spain's Summit - Granada, Sierra Nevada National Park and the White Villages of Las Alpujarras

Europe's 3rd highest range, located just 25 km to the east of the city of Granada, the main ridge of the Sierra Nevada is only 30 km north of the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Their height and proximity to the sea result in heavy snowfalls when storm fronts pass through this area of Spain, and hence its name: Sierra Nevada - literally meaning "snowy mountains" - a perfect description of the Iberian Peninsula's highest mountains, taller even than the mighty Pyrenees, with approximately 27 peaks over 3,000 metres. The range was declared a National Park in 1999, in order to protect the integrity of its unique Mediterranean high mountain ecosystems.
