WALKING IN SPAIN'S HIGHEST MOUNTAINS
SIERRA NEVADA NATIONAL PARK

Europe's 3rd highest range, located just 25 km to the east of the city of Granada, the main ridge of the Sierra Nevada is only 30 km north of the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Their height and proximity to the sea result in heavy snowfalls when storm fronts pass through this area of Spain, and hence its name: Sierra Nevada - literally meaning "snowy mountains" - a perfect description of the Iberian Peninsula's highest mountains, taller even than the mighty Pyrenees. The range was declared a National Park in 1999, in order to protect the integrity of its unique Mediterranean high mountain ecosystems. It is a land of great environmental wealth and diversity, with 2,000 of the 8,000 species of Iberian flora, including 60 species unique to Sierra Nevada.

With approximately 27 peaks over 3,000 metres, these mountains offer some wonderful walking opportunities. Our guided itinerary offers a selection of the best walks here, focusing primarily on the southern face of the range, from one or two routes lower down in the typically warm and Mediterranean environments of the southern slopes - known as the Alpujarras - to some wonderful spots higher up where abundant sunshine and water from snowmelt create some paradise-like alpine settings. Weather permitting, we will summit Mulhacen, the highest peak in the range. The tour begins with a day and night in Granada where we will visit the fabulous Alhambra palace and gardens.... for more details and an itinerary description...
