CASTILIAN ADVENTURE VILLAGES, VALLEYS AND ALPINE ZONE OF THE SIERRA DE GREDOS |
This self-guided tour explores one of Iberia's secret jewels - Castile's Sierra de Gredos - the highest and wildest mountains in Central Spain, with numerous peaks in the glacially-sculpted Central Massif over 2300m, culminating in Almanzor (2592m), one of Spain's most prestigious ascents. This is superb walking terrain, in a magnificent environment that few overseas visitors have yet experienced, where ibex, multicoloured lizards and soaring birds of prey jostle for the walker's attention with spectacular views, myriad lichens, wildflowers and butterflies.
The spring & autumn itinerary links 3 overnight bases - first at 1450m in the northern Tormes Valley where walks range from an easy tramp up a U-shaped glacial valley towards the main ridge, to strolls through Scots pine forest and along the Tormes River. Bases at 850m and 500m in southern valleys offer excursions through quaint local villages, mixed forests scented with oregano, thyme and rosemary, and ancient orchards of cherry, fig, sweet chestnut and walnut. The summer itinerary uses only the Tormes Valley base, focussing on exploration of the cool alpine zone. You'll enjoy grassy meadows, spectacular ridge walks and simple scrambles among high peaks on the superb granite of the Gredos Regional Park, as well as lower-elevation trails along the Tormes River and opportunities for refreshing dips in natural river pools. The tour highlight is an exciting excursion to the Gredos Cirque, with 2 overnights at the Elola Hut. Guided or "long-weekend" versions of these itineraries are available. NOTE: You have the option to extend the spring / autumn tour for 1 or more days with a visit to Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its rich and complex history as the nation's former capital where Jews, Christians and Moors lived in harmony for generations. The summer tour can be extended with 1 or more days in the historic city of Salamanca, also a UNESCO World Heritage city, seat of Spain's oldest university. |
