| INDEPENDENT WALKING ON THE "FRENCH" PILGRIM'S WAY TO SANTIAGO |
Although it was not the first route used, the "French" variant was the most well-travelled of the pilgrim's ways to Santiago de Compostela over the centuries and continues to be the route of choice for the bulk of modern-day pilgrims, with an incredible range of historical and artistic monuments dedicated to the apostle, accessible terrain, and the most well-developed infrastructure for attending to the needs of the continuous volume of travelers.
|
From France, the French Pilgrim's Way crosses the Pyrenees at Roncesvalles or Somport, and continues 800 km westward across northern Spain, first through the mountains of Aragón, then into the fertile valleys of Navarre and La Rioja and next across the plains of Castile, before finally entering the verdant hills of Galicia.
Our standard self-guided itinerary from León to Santiago covers approximately the last third of the route, taking you to the most emblematic spots - true jewels of Spanish art, architecture and history - and along the most beautiful walking stages of this last major stretch of the Pilgrim's Way in Spain. For those with more time, we can arrange extra days in León or Santiago, or just a slower paced itinerary, covering less kilometers per day. As many of our clients have done, you could also consider walking a longer portion of the route, or even the whole route - 800 km / 500 miles, from St. Jean Pied du Port (the last town on the route, just on the French side of the Pyrenees) to Santiago over 6 weeks, or divided up into 3 stages of 2 to 3 weeks. Lastly, remember - as experts on the Pilgrim's Way in Spain, we can arrange walking or biking itineraries on any of the various other less-frequently used Ways to Santiago de Compostela. |
